Homework Help

Special Homework Help BBQ & Recognition Service, Thursday, June 2
As another school year comes to a close, we celebrate the successful progress of our Homework Help students, Thursday, June 2. Join us for a BBQ at 6:00 p.m., and then a special recognition of the children during our regularly scheduled Thursday night service.

A good education is the cornerstone to leading a life with valuable opportunities. Helping children to improve their school performance so that they can get the most out of their education is a primary goal of the Homework Help Program, which operates under a license from the NYS Office of Child and Family Services.

/files/Images/homework help/homework help_S.jpgChildren in the third and fourth grades in the Westbury School District attend the program on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Immediately after they arrive, the students engage in physical activity outdoors or indoors, depending on the weather. A healthy snack including fruit is provided before the children break into small groups with volunteers who assist them with their school work. Those who finish their assignments early prepare for the many NYS tests required for elementary school children.

Students also engage in a nationally recognized science program as well as the Presidential Fitness Challenge. Crafts and games are regularly included, as well as sing along time. Field trips and outside educators are also part of the program. /files/Images/hispanic ministry/hispanic hh_snack_C_234z233.jpg

Homework Help takes place every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during the school year from about 2:45 until 5:30 PM. On Thursdays, students and their families, volunteers and their families are invited to stay for a free dinner followed by worship.

High school aged students and adults are welcomed to volunteer. Volunteers can participate even if they cannot be present during the entire session. Please note that volunteers 16 and older are subject to a background check required by New York State. If you are interested in volunteering or would like additional information, please contact Jackie Kildale at THE LIFE, 516.333.3355, or email Jackie@thelifeny.org.

The Homework Help Program is funded in part by a generous grant from Wheat Ridge Ministries.
