Homework Help
At THE LIFE, another way we WELCOME IN and REACH OUT is through our Homework Help Program. This free homework assistance is a true gift not only for the children who participate in the program but also for myriad volunteers who share their tutoring skills and their warm hearts with children. Two times a week THE LIFE is bustling with children and adults studying, learning and having a lot of fun!
Helping children improve their school performance so they can get the most out of their education is a primary goal of the Homework Help Program.
Children in the fourth grade in the Westbury School District attend Homework Help at THE LIFE on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Immediately after they arrive, the students engage in physical activity outdoors or indoors, depending on the weather. A healthy snack including fruit is provided before the children break into small groups with volunteers who assist them with their school work. Those who finish their assignments early engage in fun activities that also prepare for the many NYS tests required for fourth graders.
During the last hour of the program, children participate in crafts, games or learn new skills such as sewing, kitchen forensics, or word games. Field trips and outside educators are also part of the program.
Homework Help takes place every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during the school year from 2:45 until 5:30 p.m. On Thursdays, students and their families, volunteers and their families are invited to stay for a free dinner followed by worship.
High school aged students and adults are welcome to volunteer. Volunteers can participate even if they cannot be present during the entire session. If you are interested in volunteering or would like additional information, please contact Laura Bauer.
The Homework Help Program is funded in part by a generous grant from Wheat Ridge Ministries.
